Both the town and the Coolidge Dam on the Gila River, completed in 1930, were named for President Calvin Coolidge. The dam turned sandy soil into farmland, and Coolidge became the hub of Arizona's cotton industry. The Hohokam-built Casa Grande Ruins, on Ruins Drive, were listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1966.
